AEO vs SEO is now a live search. In the United States, 1,900 people a month look it up, at a Semrush keyword difficulty of 47 (Semrush, us database, August 2026). Companies selling the thing wrote most of the answers they find.
This piece takes the opposite approach. Every claim below comes from one of three places: a public source we link to, a Semrush pull we date, or a measurement from our own client work that we describe without naming the client.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, means making your content the source an AI assistant quotes when it answers a question. The assistants here are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s Gemini, Claude and Google’s own AI Overviews.
Two terms to define before going further. SEO, search engine optimization, means getting a page to rank in a list of links. A citation happens when an AI assistant names your brand or links your page inside its written answer.
Search interest keeps climbing. “Answer engine optimization” draws 3,600 monthly searches in the United States, and its twelve-month trend line rises steadily to a peak in the current month (Semrush, us database, August 2026).
One warning about the acronym. “AEO” on its own pulls 22,200 searches a month. Its results page belongs to the clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters and to Authorised Economic Operator, a customs status. Write the term out in full if you want the people who mean this one to find you.
How does answer engine optimization differ from traditional SEO?
The mechanics overlap almost completely. Two things change: the shape of the result, and what counts as a win.
SEO produces a ranked list, where success means a position and a click. AEO produces a written answer with a handful of sources attached, where success means becoming one of those sources.
Google is unusually direct about the overlap. Its own documentation states: “The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode). There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary” (Google Search Central, AI features and your website).
People quote that sentence to argue AEO is a marketing invention. Read the rest of the same guidance and the picture narrows. Google describes its own surfaces, where AI answers run on its existing ranking systems. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own retrieval and owe Google nothing.
Does answer engine optimization replace SEO?
No. AI answers draw on pages that already rank, so the work that gets a page ranked is the work that makes it quotable.
Google’s guidance on generative AI features puts it plainly. “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO” (Google Search Central).
The payoff on each click changes. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025.
On visits where an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result 8% of the time, against 15% where no summary appeared. Clicks on a link inside the summary itself happened on 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025).
In that study, 18% of the Google searches recorded produced an AI summary. So roughly one search in five pays out at about half the click rate of the other four.
How does answer engine optimization work?
It works by making a page easy to lift a clean answer from, and by making the brand behind it identifiable. Both halves matter, and most teams skip the second.
The extractable half is structural. Phrase a heading as the question a buyer would type. Answer it in the first sentence beneath, in plain language, before any preamble. Keep paragraphs short enough that one can stand alone as a quote.
The identity half comes down to consistency. In a July 2026 review of a prospect’s site, we traced a pattern where AI engines cited the company’s website as a source and never named the company in the answer text.
The site’s organisation markup carried a slightly different legal name to its page titles, its copy and its press coverage. It also published no links connecting the brand to its profiles elsewhere.
That is a mechanical fault with a mechanical fix, and nobody reading the page can see it.
What does answer engine optimization change about content?
It changes what a page must contain before it earns anything. Content that holds a reader for four minutes and content that survives being quoted in two sentences are different objects.
Our own audits put numbers on the gap. Across six sites we manage for one client, a July 2026 review read 196 articles and found only 53 targeting anything with measurable search demand. The rest covered event recaps, award announcements, podcast episodes and fundraisers.
The same review found that only 35 of 779 organic clicks over a 36-day window came from anything other than the client’s own name. A large content library earned almost nothing beyond brand search.
One thing to be careful about here. Structured data, the hidden code that tells a machine what a page is, earns its place as part of general SEO, and Google says so directly.
Google also says: “Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search, and there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add.” Both halves of that guidance hold, and quoting one half alone misleads.
Google retired the FAQ rich result for every site on 7 May 2026. FAQ no longer appears anywhere in Google’s structured data gallery.
The FAQ content on a page still earns its place. The markup no longer displays anything in Google, and no search vendor has ever published a claim that its AI reads FAQ markup.
How do you measure AI visibility?
You measure it by asking the engines the questions your buyers ask, then recording what comes back. No ranking report exists for AI answers, so you build the measurement yourself.
We use a fixed panel. Take a set of buyer questions. Put each one to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude with live web search enabled, on a stated date. Then hand-check every answer for the domains it cited and the brands it named.
Between 14 and 31 July 2026 we ran that panel for six B2B companies and recorded more than 340 answers. Three patterns held across all six.
Branded questions inflate the score. In one panel the company collected 12 citations. Eight of them came from the two questions that already contained its name. Strip those and four citations remain out of 72 possible.
Citations and mentions are different outcomes. Engines cited one company as a source eight times and named it in the answer text four times. All four mentions came from the single question that spelled out its brand.
The engines disagree sharply. In the same panel, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini each cited the brand on at least one unbranded question. ChatGPT cited it on none.
Report the unbranded number. It is the only one that tells you whether a stranger would find you.
Is answer engine optimization worth it?
It is worth it when your buyers ask questions an assistant can answer, and when you can measure whether you appear in those answers. Without a baseline it is a line item you cannot defend.
Our own site makes the case for a baseline. Google Search Console for legencymedia.com recorded 17,944 impressions and 98 clicks between 8 February and 5 August 2026. Average position was 12.5, across 259 distinct queries.
Not one of those 259 queries contained “answer engine”, “AEO”, “AI visibility”, “generative engine”, “AI search”, “LLM” or “ChatGPT”. A site with no answer-shaped content on a subject records no demand for it. That is what you would expect, and it is why the rebuild starts here.
Frequently asked questions
Do rankings still matter for answer engine optimization?
Yes. AI answers draw on pages the engine can already find and trust, so ranking well remains the entry condition. The practical change: a page now has to survive being quoted out of context, which favours clear headings and direct opening sentences.
What are the best tools for answer engine optimization?
The tooling is young and no single product covers every engine reliably. A manual panel across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, run on a fixed question set and a fixed date, gives you a defensible baseline. Any tool you buy later can be checked against it.
How much would answer engine optimization cost for a startup budget?
The first month is mostly measurement, and measurement costs time rather than money. Building a question set and running it across the four main assistants takes about a day. It tells you whether you have a visibility problem before you spend anything on fixing one.
Does answer engine optimization work for small websites?
It works where the site answers questions the market asks. Engines quote answers rather than announcements, so a small site with ten genuinely useful answer pages often gets quoted more than a large site full of news.
